Volume as context — chart vocabulary
Not investment advice. Educational chart vocabulary only. This page does not tell you to buy, sell, or hold anything. Volume is a way traders describe how much traded in a bucket — not confirmation theater, not a signal, not an alert. Markets involve risk of loss. High or low volume does not predict the next move. Voltron Trading Lab is not a broker, advisor, or exchange.
Data source: Placeholder — schematic / illustrative only (no live vendor wired).
Delay: N/A for schematic · when a live delayed feed is added: disclose vendor name + approximate delay on the chart (e.g. ~15–20 min / end-of-day).

Plain definition
| Term | Plain meaning |
|------|----------------|
| Volume | How many shares, contracts, or units changed hands in a time bucket (exact unit depends on the market and the data vendor). |
| Relative volume (idea) | Comparing today’s bucket to a typical past bucket — still a description, not a trade rule. |
| Thin / thick (talk) | Informal words for low vs high participation — fuzzy, timeframe-dependent. |
Volume answers “how much activity showed up,” not “what you should do next.”
How it usually appears on a chart
Under the price pane, many charts draw volume bars — one bar per candle/bucket. Taller bar ≈ more traded in that bucket (on that vendor’s definition).
Education tip: Always ask which market and which vendor’s volume definition you are looking at. Equity share volume, futures contract volume, and crypto exchange volume are not interchangeable stories.

When a delayed public feed is wired later, every live chart block will show source + latency next to the image — same rule as `/disclaimers/` §5.
Honest limits (why “volume confirms” is slippery)
- **Missing / estimated volume** — some venues and delayed feeds are incomplete.
- **One exchange ≠ whole market** — especially in crypto and fragmented equity routing.
- **Timeframe mismatch** — a “huge” 1-minute bar can be noise on a weekly chart.
- **Narrative risk** — people retrofit volume stories after the fact. Past ≠ future.
On this site we treat volume as context vocabulary, not as proof a move “must continue” or “must reverse.”
What this page deliberately does *not* do
- No “volume spike → buy/sell” mapping
- No “confirmation” as a trade instruction
- No alerts-as-advice or win-rate theater
- No paid TradingView / terminal upsell
Practice with fake balances only on [`/mock/`](/mock/) (literacy quests / XP — not profit bragging).
Quick self-check
1. Can you define volume in one sentence without recommending a trade?
2. Can you name why vendor / venue / timeframe matter before trusting a “spike” screenshot?
3. Can you refuse the sentence “volume confirms, so enter now”?
4. Can you say: volume describes participation in a finished bucket; it does not order the next one?
