Risk and return
Return talk without risk talk is incomplete. Name tradeoffs before narratives. Education only — not a recommendation to buy, sell, or hold anything.
The tradeoff habit
Higher expected return usually comes bundled with more ways to lose. Literacy is naming the failure mode before the upside story.
- Market risk — broad prices move against you.
- Issuer risk — one name fails or dilutes.
- Liquidity risk — hard to exit near the quote.
Volatility is not the full risk picture
- Volatility describes movement size/speed.
- Calm prices can still hide credit, custody, or gap risk.
- Treat vol as a description, not a grade.
Diversification as a concept
Spreading exposure can reduce the damage of one bad name — it does not delete market risk. Concentration amplifies every risk type.
Time horizon
- Short horizons make volatility feel like permanent loss.
- Long horizons still face inflation, regime change, and behavior risk.
