Edge vs randomness (educational framing)
Education only — not a recommendation to buy, sell, or hold anything.
This page is about how to think about skill vs luck in practice results. It is not a claim that you (or Voltron) have an edge. Fake P&L is not proof of a real-money edge.
Two ideas people mix up
| Idea | Plain meaning |
|---|---|
| Randomness / noise | Outcomes that look meaningful but would also appear in coin-flip-like sequences |
| Edge | A repeatable advantage after costs — hard to prove, easy to over-claim |
A short streak of green simulated trades proves almost nothing about edge. A short streak of red proves almost nothing about"no edge" either — sample size and costs matter.

Why paper wins mislead
- Small samples — 10 fills are a story, not a study.
- Ignored costs — spreads and slippage change the picture (fees, liquidity).
- Selection bias — remembering winners, burying losers (journal helps: trading journal).
- Changing rules mid-stream — if you keep rewriting the process after each fill, you are fitting noise.
- Simulator kindness — some mocks fill too cleanly vs thin real books.

What "looking for edge" means in education
Educational framing (not a how-to-get-rich plan):
- Define the process before the drill (thesis, size, invalidation).
- Grade process adherence separately from fake P&L.
- Ask whether results would still look special after costs and a longer sample.
- Prefer boring consistency over dramatic one-off wins.
Coach tips that push process over scoreboard align with this page — still not investment advice.

Phrases that should make you pause
- "Can't lose / locked profits"
- "My backtest always worked" (see planned backtest-bias page)
- "Ten wins in a row means I have an edge"
- Wire headline treated as a private tip (Learn deep-links — FACT / OPINION / SIM)
---
Practice drill (fake money)
- Run the same simple process for N simulated fills (pick a number and stick to it).
- Journal process grade every time.
- Only then look at aggregate fake P&L.
- Ask: would I still believe this if the P&L were flipped?
