Short selling & the unlimited loss concept

Vocabulary only — not a recommendation to short anything. Practice shorts on the mock desk use fake money only (SIM short). Companion to /mock/?mode=short.

What “short” means (plain language)

StancePlain idea (education)
LongYou buy first; you generally benefit if the mark rises (still can lose).
ShortYou sell first (in live markets often by borrowing shares) hoping to buy back cheaper later if the mark falls.

On Voltron’s practice desk, a short can be simulated without a real locate or borrow — labeled SIM short — so you can feel P&L direction. That is education, not brokerage, custody, or a locate service.

Why people say “unlimited loss”

If you are long a stock bought at $50, a common teaching point is that the most you can lose on that long share (ignoring fees/financing) is about $50 if the price goes to zero.

If you are short at $50, the share price can theoretically keep rising without a fixed ceiling. Losses can grow as the mark rises. That risk shape is the unlimited loss concept in risk literacy.

Live markets also add locate rules, borrow fees, buy-ins, hard-to-borrow dynamics, and margin calls — our SIM desk does not recreate all of that.

Not investment advice. This page does not recommend shorting. It names a risk shape so practice warnings mean something.
